“White Bear”. “Nanook”. “Ours Polaire”. The largest extant bear species goes by many names. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time on the sea ice and are actually classified as marine mammals. Their scientific name – Ursus maritimus – means "maritime bear."
Because of expected habitat loss caused by climate change, the polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species. They are considered to have existed at least 150,000 years ago, yet with dwindling sea ice their existence is severely threatened.
